A toddler left unattended in a vehicle on Hawaii island Sunday has been transported to Oahu in critical condition.

Hawaii County police responding to a report of a child suffering from heat exhaustion found that a 2-year-old girl had already been transported by paramedics to nearby Kona Community Hospital.

According to the girl’s father, the family had been shopping and he dropped them off at home not realizing his daughter was asleep in the vehicle as he went to work, police said.

When the family realized the toddler wasn’t at home, the girl’s aunt drove to the father workplace and found the girl in the vehicle.

The girl was intubated in critical condition and subsequently flown to Kapiolani Medical Center, police said.

Police are investigating the incident and ask that anyone who may have information on the case is asked to contact Sergeant David Araki at (808) 326-4646 ext. 296.
