Hawaii pro Jared Sawada shot 32 on the front nine and cruised to medalist honors Monday in the U.S. Open local qualifier at Waialae Country Club. Sawada finished at 5-under 67 and advances to sectionals, which begin Monday.
Hawaii amateur Kolbe Irei will join him, after shooting 72 and winning a playoff with pro Kyohei Nomura and amateur Justin Ngan for the final qualifying spot.
Last month, Hawaii pros Parker McLachlin and Justin Keiley won a local qualifier at Club at Hokuli`a. Pros Juan Rodriguez and Christopher Keiter were alternates.
Maui’s Sam Cyr shot 66 to win the local qualifier at The Grand Golf Club in San Diego. He beat a field of 90. Kaneohe’s Samuel Rodriguez and Honolulu’s Jun Ho Won earned alternate spots in Irvine, Calif., and Aurora, Colo.
The 119th U.S. Open is June 13-16 at Pebble Beach Golf Links in California. A total of 8,602 golfers are attempting to earn the 50 qualifying spots
Hawaii might have just one golfer at the 74th U.S. Women’s Open later this month — 2014 champion Michelle Wie. Nicole Sakamoto, Alexandra White, Stephanie Kono, Malia Nam and Aneka Seumanutafa earned alternate slots at five of the 25 sectionals.
Kim, Gunderson capture Francis Brown Four-Ball title
Robert Kim and Colby Gunderson put a swift end to a tournament full of long matches, defeating Isaac Jaffurs and Stephen Cable, 5 and 4, Sunday to win the 68th Francis Brown Four Ball.
The team event was played the last two weekends at Ala Wai Municipal. It is run by the Hawaii State Golf Association.
Kim and Gunderson, seeded seventh, reached the final with a pair of 1-up victories and a 3-and-2 win in the quarterfinals. Jaffurs and Cable, seeded eighth, went to the 18th hole in all three of their matches.
That theme ended early Sunday. Cable and Jaffurs went 1-up with birdie at the par-3 fifth, but Kim and Gunderson won the next four holes. They shot 30 on the front nine in the best-ball format, won the 11th and 13th and closed it out with par on the next hole.
Phil Anamizu and Carl Ho captured the Senior title, beating Scott Ichimura and Mike Kawate, 3 and 2. Eddie Morales and Craig Watanabe took A Flight, 7 and 6, over Lance Migita and Kelly Harada. Leighton Uyeda and Glenn Maeda won the B Flight, 6 and 4, over Alexander Chung and Mel Komatsu.
