I was riding my bicycle, obeying all the traffic rules, and came to the intersection of Kapahulu Avenue and Ala Wai Boulevard.
I waited at the crosswalk by the library where the makai-bound traffic on Kapahulu is turning on to Ala Wai. I waited through 17 cars before the 18th driver signaled that I could walk my bicycle through the crosswalk.
When I approached my home, near the crosswalk where Foodland traffic was exiting Ala Moana onto Piikoi, I saw my father. He was waiting to use the crosswalk to get to Foodland. When the light changed and the walk sign began, he did not move. He is an older gentleman, and uses a walker.
I asked why he was not moving. He said, “Look at the cars coming out from Foodland.”
There were three cars waiting to turn onto Piikoi and not one of them slowed down to give him an opportunity to cross.
He said, “I’m retired. I’ll wait.”
