Crystal Rose, a Hilo-born attorney, has been selected by the state Probate Court to be part of the Kamehameha Schools Board of Trustees.
Rose has served as a trustee for the Nature Conservancy, a board member for the Boys and Girls Club of Hawaii and the Blue Planet Foundation, and was a member of the advisory boards of Kamehameha Schools and Catholic Charities Hawaii.
She serves on the boards of Central Pacific Bank, Gentry Homes and Hawaiian Airlines.
“Ms. Rose’s decades of leadership experience and generosity of spirit in serving our local community will make her a valuable addition to the trust,” said Trustee Chairman Micah Kane. “Together we will help ensure the well-being of Native Hawaiians by lifting up our keiki, just as our founder Ke Ali‘i Pauahi envisioned more than 130 years ago.”
Rose, a Kamehameha alumna herself, was a founding partner of the law firm Bays Lung Rose Holma. She specializes in real estate, trust, business and construction litigation, and earned a Juris Doctorate degree from the University of California Hastings College of the Law.
Her five-year term will begin on July 1, replacing Trustee Corbett Kalama, whose term ends on June 30. Once Rose’s term ends in 2024, she can petition to be reappointed for one more five-year term.
When selecting a trustee, the Probate Court appoints a Trustee Screening Committee, which solicits applications from individuals, eventually nominating three semifinalists. A pool of 51 applicants was considered before Rose was selected as one of the semifinalists and eventually as the trustee.
The Probate Court’s requirements for trustees include experience successfully managing the land and monetary assets of large corporations and expertise in strategic planning and policy setting for such corporations or educational institutions.
