The recent helicopter crash and resulting loss of life were truly tragic in every sense. Lately, however, I have had an enhanced enjoyment of my backyard lanai.
We are blessed to live a few thousand yards from the Ka Iwi Coast and can hear the crashing of the waves from our backyard. But until recently any and all sound, including waves and conversations, were overpowered by tour helicopters passing overhead or nearby every 30 minutes, beginning at 8 a.m.
After the crash, the noise seems to have abated, at least in part. It seems that the pilots are (at least for now) adhering to altitude restrictions mandated by the Hawaii Air Tour Common Procedures Manual (available for inspection online).
I think everyone should enjoy this beautiful stretch of coastline, arguably the most beautiful on Oahu, and I hope the pilots will continue to share the view from a proper altitude for the enjoyment of all, both airborne and ground-dwellers.
