Abortion is arguably the most divisive and emotionally charged issue of our time, and was highlighted in Sunday’s Insight section (“Women and abortion,” Star-Advertiser, May 19). As Christine Flowers said: “There is no middle ground on abortion.”
But maybe there is a middle ground where pro-choice and pro-life advocates can meet. The demand for abortion stems from unwanted pregnancies. Eliminate unwanted pregnancies and you eliminate the demand for abortion.
Yes, it’s unrealistic to expect to eliminate all unwanted pregnancies. but reducing them would be a step forward.
This could be done by advocating sex education (home, school, church), providing family planning services and expanding adoption services. Clearly these are issues that both sides could buy into.
