Thank you for your excellent editorial, “Be prepared for dangerous trails” (Star-Advertiser, Our View, May 29).
It brought to mind a much less dramatic experience my late husband and I had when a visitor insisted on hiking alone through our 52-acre country home in upstate New York before we retired to Hawaii.
We had to call the state police to locate her as night approached and she failed to return after several hours in our rough, wooded property that adjoined state land.
Wearing sandals and skimpy shorts, her embarrassment seemed appropriate. With today’s cell phones, compasses, GPS, whistles and all the guidelines from environmental groups, Amanda Eller’s ordeal and survival should be a cautionary, rather than a heroic and profitable, story.
