Vacation rentals must respect zoning

Proponents of the vacation rental industry have been out in force lobbying against City Council bills aimed at regulating short-term use of residential property. Their complaint: The legislation runs the risk of constraining tourist arrivals and harming the economy. What they overlook is that some hosting still will be allowed, by permit, as long as a host is on premises — and without up-ending Oahu’s entire zoning code. Those with a home to rent: A long-term tenant surely needs it. Problem solved.

Younger workers chafe behind elders

First came the class divide; now, with the aging of America, comes a brewing age divide.

A recent poll of 1,423 adults found that some younger workers aren’t exactly thrilled having older folks remaining in or rejoining the workforce. Among results of the Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research poll: about 6 in 10 Americans age 60-plus say the older-workforce trend has been good for the economy, but just 3 in 10 adults under age 30 think that.

With Hawaii having the highest life expectancy in the nation — just over 81 — the young ‘uns better get used to a growing silver workforce.
