There is no tsunami threat to Hawaii following a 6.6-magnitude earthquake near the Kermadec Islands in the Pacific Ocean this evening.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said the earthquake occured at 7:17 p.m. Hawaii time and is the second major earthquake in the area in less than 24 hours.

There is no tsunami threat to Hawaii following a 7.4-magnitude earthquake that struck the Kermadec Islands region in the Pacific Ocean today.

Ministry of Civil Defence and Emergency Management officials said they are assessing whether the earthquake could generate a tsunami affecting New Zealand, according to a tweet. The earthquake struck the region at 10:55 a.m. today.

“If a tsunami has been generated in this location it is not likely to arrive in New Zealand for at least 2 hours,” said the tweet posted at 1:08 p.m.
