Letter: Preserve landscaping at Honolulu airport entrance

To add to the complaints about Honolulu’s airport, someone has to mention the unprofessionalism of the ongoing construction. It is always stated in the contract documents that existing landscaping be protected and maintained during construction of any project. If the area is to be replanted, the existing should be removed and the area left neat and clean — not as an eyesore.

Unfortunately, the existing poorly designed and maintained landscaping of the entrance to the airport is being completely ignored.

The existing automatically controlled sprinkler system has been turned off, leading to loss of the expensive plants.

The state Department of Transportation probably uses as an excuse that the area will be redesigned and replanted when the rail project is finished. That might be another two years; meanwhile, the wasteland we and visitors must endure is not acceptable.

Truly, this is poor advertising and a disgrace for the entrance to our tropical paradise.
