Kauai protesters block visitors from entering Kuhio Highway into Ha‘ena State Park

    Kauai’s Kuhio Highway was briefly closed Tuesday morning as protesters blocked the roadway heading to Ha‘ena State Park. Nancy Mae Chandler confronted a visitor attempting to drive in.

    A new Ha‘ena State Park Master Plan limits visitation to 900 people a day, and new restrictions mean visitors to the park need to reserve parking.

    Tourists were turned away on Kuhio Highway just after 5 a.m. Tuesday, but protesters picked local traffic out of the line and let it go through. Kauai police arrived before 7 a.m. and opened the road to everyone.

The fragile peace over the reopening of Kuhio Highway and better management of tourism was quickly shattered Tuesday by protesters who formed a human chain to temporarily block the gateway to Ha‘ena State Park and other popular community natural resources and popular attractions on the Garden Isle.
