Honolulu Star-Advertiser sports writer Cindy Luis was named the Print Category winner for the American Volleyball Coaches Association Grant Burger Media Award on Wednesday.
It is the second time that Luis, whose career in Hawaii began in 1981 with the Honolulu Star-Bulletin, won this award. The last was for the 2005-06 school year.
“I am very honored and humbled,” Luis said. “I am fortunate to be able to combine two things I love — writing and sports — and to be able to cover the sport that has always been played at the highest level in Hawaii.”
Luis was a finalist for the overall award that went to Volleyball Magazine. Among those also recognized was University of Hawaii media relations director Derek Inouchi in the men’s volleyball sports information category.
“I cannot imagine a recipient more deserving of this accolade and award,” said Evan Silberstein, Rainbow Wahine sand volleyball assistant coach, who nominated Luis. “Cindy has seen and done it all over a lifetime of serious, fun and accurate volleyball reporting to, through and for the beloved fans of all things Hawai’i volleyball.”
Luis also has been recognized for her work by USA Volleyball, the PacWest Conference, Kalos Kagathos (international sports coverage), Hawaii Interscholastic Athletic Directors Association, the Association for Women in Sports Media, the Women’s Sport Foundation and Hawaii Publishers Association, among others. Her work on the annual Wahine volleyball preview magazine contributed to the Honolulu Star-Advertiser’s Best of the West Award from the Associated Press.
The AVCA Grant Burger Media Award recognizes members of the media who have been involved in the advancement of the sport of volleyball through consistent coverage in all mediums. It is named in honor of Grant Burger, former Director of Sports Information and Associate Director of the AVCA (1988-92), whose hard work, innovative mind, knowledge and enthusiasm took the areas of media relations and publications at the AVCA to a higher level and increased awareness of the sport of volleyball nationwide.
