Brazil’s Alcino Pirata won the overall top award in the Hawaii Adaptive Surfing Championships at Kuhio Beach on Thursday.
Pirata also won the Kneel division, which was one of the 11 categories of competition. For his efforts, Pirata won a hard-carved wooden wave trophy by Honolulu craftsman Craig Short.
The event was hosted by AccesSurf and World Ocean Challenge. About 75 surfers with disabilities representing about 15 countries competed.
Hawaii’s Faith Lennox won the Stand Women’s division. She was one of seven competitors from Hawaii who placed in the top four of a division.
Elena Oglivie of ‘Iolani selected for national training team
Elena Oglivie, a rising senior at ‘Iolani, has been selected as one of 24 players for the U.S. Girls Youth National Volleyball Training Team.
Oglivie, who has orally committed to Stanford, is one of 10 hitters vying for a spot on the FIVB Girls U18 World Championship team.
The team will hold its training camp July 17-26 at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo. The roster will be cut to 12 players who will compete at the world championship Sept. 5-14 in Cairo, Egypt.
Karissa Cook, Taylor Crabb lead bevy of isle volleyball players at AVP Seattle
Rainbow Wahine Beach alumna Karissa Cook and former Punahou School standout Taylor Crabb were among those who advanced after Day 1 of the AVP Seattle Open, held at Lake Sammamish State Park in Seattle.
Cook, a 2014 AVCA Beach All-American at UH, and teammate Jace Pardon won their first two matches to remain in the winner’s bracket as the fourth seed. They defeated 13th seed Mackenzie Ponnet and Sheila Shaw in three sets (30-28, 19-21, 16-14) in Round 1 and then defeated 12th seed Lara Dykstra/Kim Smith in straight sets, 21-15, 21-14. They face top-seeded Kelly Claes and Sarah Sponcil in today’s winner’s bracket.
Cook’s partner while at UH, Brittany Tiegs, lost her Round 1 match with Molly Turner to third seed Emily Day/Betsi Flint 21-16, 21-11. In the contender’s bracket, Tiegs/Turner upset 11th seeded Nicolette Martin/Allie Wheeler 21-19, 21-18 and continue play in today’s contender’s bracket.
Another former All-American on the beach for the SandBows, Katie Spieler, won her first-round match with teammate Brittany Howard over 11 seed Martin/Wheeler 17-21, 21-16, 15-13. They were swept in their second round match 21-15, 21-13 and dropped into today’s contender’s bracket.
Seeded 15th, Emily Hartong and Delaney Knudsen lost their first round match to second seed Emily Stockman/Kelley Larsen 21-13, 17-21, 13-15. Dropping into the contender’s bracket, Hartong, a former UH star, and Knudsen were eliminated from the tournament in a three-set loss to Carly Wopat/Brittany Hochevar.
On the men’s side, the top-seeded duo of Crabb and teammate Jake Gibb advanced by winning their first two matches. They defeated 16th seed Raffe Paulis and David Lee 21-15, 21-13 and then earned a walkover win after a leg injury suffered by Ricardo Santos forced him and partner Sean Rosenthal to withdraw from the tournament. Crabb and Gibb take on fourth-seeded Chase Budinger — a former NBA player — and Casey Patterson today in the winner’s bracket.
