The Hawaii soccer team will host three Pac-12 teams at Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium, matching a program high, in the Rainbow Wahine’s 2019 schedule released Tuesday.
Coming in are USC (the season opener Aug. 22), Washington State (Sept. 19), and UCLA (Sept. 22). All three won at least one game in the 2018 NCAA tournament.
UH also takes a challenging road trip to North and South Dakota for three games in five days in September. It opens Big West play at home on Oct. 3 against Cal State Northridge.
“This is among the most challenging, if not the most challenging, because of the Dakotas road trip as well,” said ninth-year UH coach Michele Nagamine of schedules during her tenure. “We opted to try to get more home games scheduled, which meant scheduling a little bit harder, higher caliber opponents.”
Former player Johnson joins UH staff
Former Hawaii men’s basketball forward Gibson Johnson has joined the Rainbow Warriors as a graduate manager for the 2019-20 season, he told the Star-Advertiser this week.
Johnson, who played in Manoa in the 2016-17 and 2017-18 seasons, was an academic All-Big West honoree. The Centerville, Utah, native will help guide five of his former teammates in his new role on Eran Ganot’s staff.
“I’m excited to be back with the team. I have an awesome staff to learn from and a great group of guys to help get better,” he messaged.
UH swim/dive receives national award
The University of Hawaii men’s and women’s swimming and diving programs each were named to the Scholar All-America team for the spring 2019 semester by the College Swimming and Diving Coaches Association of America on Tuesday.
The Rainbow Warriors accrued a team GPA of 3.37, while the Rainbow Wahine had a team GPA of 3.38.
For the first time in the history of the CSCAA All-America Team, over 100 men’s teams earned Scholar All-America honors.
In April, UH was honored by the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation for having 23 student-athletes picked for all-academic honors.
