I commend Birendra Singh Huja’s letter about the freedom of the press (“Our freedom depends on freedom of the press,” Star-Advertiser, June 21).
My country of origin has the freest press in Asia. His letter reminds me of my younger days as an activist law student in Manila. I was then a young, intrepid student using my writings to expose the illegal activities of corrupt politicians, greedy landholders and the prevalence of incompetent government workers, most of whom were political protegés. I offended many and received threatening calls, but that did not stop me from writing.
One thing is sure: An intrepid and true journalist does not listen to any kind of threat. I know because I experienced it.
