Regarding “Season tickets sales key to UH’s well being” (Star-Advertiser, Ferd Lewis, June 27): For years we have said that charging to watch a sports event on TV will in the long run have a negative impact on the fan base for the University of Hawaii.
Adult sports fans watching a sporting event with their children and grandchildren form the essential base for developing future fans. If young people seldom see their local team playing or only see them twice a year, the loyalty associated with being a true fan is never developed.
It appears that UH needs the revenue from “pay-per-view” TV to assist with its present financial needs, but it may be hurting itself in the future as the number of fans diminish. Add the cost of attending a game, the traffic battle going to and from the stadium, the restricted areas to tailgate and the parking issues, one can see why people are discouraged from becoming faithful fans.
