The toppling of Kawaiahaʻo Church cemetery headstones — 27 is the revised count — has been met universally with expressions of outrage and calls for corrective action. There seems no rational cause for such a pointlessly vile gesture.
Advocates for protection of Native Hawaiian burials are sure to agree with that assessment. Many also would say that right-minded revulsion about desecration of graves is what guides laws aimed at protecting burials, within a cemetery or in unmarked locations.
