Hawaii students win awards for projects ranging from ‘hot’ composting to a fishpond cleanup

Students at Honolulu Waldorf School are harvesting limu, planting native plants and cleaning and restoring a fishpond. Under the direction of the Maunalua Heritage Fishponds Center, students are restoring the Niu Valley ecosystem located within a one-mile radius of their school.

Honolulu Waldorf Middle School students are helping to clean Kalauhaehae Fishpond as part of the school’s Hawai‘i Youth Sustainability Challenge project. Their goal is to restore the Niu Valley ecosystem within a one-mile radius of their school. Ellis Chen, 11, picked out plastic debris from the fishpond during a cleanup outing Wednesday.
