Regarding the new law for pedestrians entering a crosswalk, my husband and I are seniors and daily walkers (“New Hawaii crosswalk law takes effect today,” Star-Advertiser, June 29).
We know the “hot spots” around the city for walkers. In particular, the crosswalk at Piikoi and Waimanu allows a mere five to six seconds to enter the crosswalk before the countdown begins.
A huge problem at this intersection is that vehicles very often make a right turn when the white walk sign first appears, followed by two or three more vehicles. At that point, the don’t-walk countdown begins and pedestrians cannot enter the crosswalk. What is needed is either a longer walk sign or a crackdown on motorists who use the walk time to turn right.
I understand both sides of the issue, but more needs to be done, remembering that the car is a potential lethal weapon against defenseless pedestrians. Please study this further to prevent more deaths.
