Steve Spurrier, the all-time winningest coach at Florida and South Carolina, and former Virginia Tech coach Frank Beamer will serve as head coaches in the 2020 Polynesian Bowl, the game announced Wednesday.

The high school football all-star game will be held Jan. 18, at Aloha Stadium.

Spurrier, who won a national championship with the Gators, has won more than 225 games as a college head coach, which includes a stop at Duke. He will coach Team Mauka.

“Hawaii in January to coach in the Polynesian Bowl is about as good as it gets,” Spurrier said in a press release. “I’m looking forward to being part of this amazing experience.”

Beamer, who will coach Team Makai, won 280 games as head coach at Murray State and Virginia Tech. Inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2018, Beamer won four Big East championships and three ACC titles.

“The Polynesian Bowl is an incredible celebration of culture and football,” Beamer said in a release. “It’s going to be a lot of fun coaching the best high school players in paradise.”

Previous head coaches in the Polynesian Bowl include June Jones, Dick Tomey, Dick Vermeil, Terry Donahue, Mike Bellotti and Jim Zorn.

The game has already received commitments from 15 five-star prospects as ranked by recruiting website 247Sports.

Saint Louis linebackers Jordan Botelho and Nick Herbig and receivers Matt Sykes and Roman Wilson, Kapolei defensive lineman Maceal Afaese, Punahou defensive back Alaka’i Gilman and offensive lineman Solatoa Moea’i have accepted offers to play in the game.

Beginning next month, 18 more players from Hawaii high schools will be announced for the game.
