The walls and entry area of the South Shore Market have been turned into a photo gallery this month.
“The Shape of the Wave to Come” features works by 17 local photographers and artists, who are displaying works that they consider personal favorites.
The show was curated by Mark Kishimi, a photographer, graphic designer and editor whose works on display include “Magic Island,” pictured.
“We want it to feel like it came from the voice of the people,” he said in a statement. “We want to showcase things that are true and good, in the best light possible.”
Many of the photos have a familiar ocean theme.
Lenny Kaloho contributes a beautiful series focusing on a free diver underwater.
Chris Rohrer brings a sense of humor to the canvas with his “Waiks.” It depicts a man with an inner tube around his stomach looking out to sea, where surfers are hanging out waiting for waves.
Other works show everyday scenes that cause one to pause and reflect, such as Jordan Lum’s photo of an elderly bus rider, seen in silhouette as an urban landscape slips by outside. Lum, a former Honolulu resident, used to drive a bus and took portraits of his fellow bus drivers.
Joseph Abad, meanwhile, found an interesting mix of texture, shape and depth in a photo of a man reading the newspaper in what appears to be a library.
Surfing images usually show the action and exhilaration of the sport, but photographer John Hook’s untitled image reveals that even at rest there can be excitement, as rain drizzles down on a surfer scanning the ocean for a wave.
Other contributors are Matthew Tapia, Tommy Hite, Kana Ogawa, Kalani Largusa, Josiah Patterson, Kali Alexander, Michelle Mishina, Brandyn Liu, Dru and Gabi Hara and Lila Lee.
The exhibit is on the ground floor of the South Shore Market, with several pieces clustered in front of Mori by Art & Flea, and others installed on the walls of other businesses. The exhibit is up through July 28.
