Most of us who actually live in Hawaii would agree that if Pele did not want a telescope on Mauna Kea, there would not be any telescopes on Mauna Kea.
We also must agree that since history began in these islands, Mauna Kea has been hallowed ground. As such, international protocol dictates people and materials must be sanctified upon arrival, and that speech and conduct must be reverent at all times.
Clearly, those who disagree have their own axe to grind, which has nothing to do with spirituality, nor aloha.
I believe Pele would agree that Office of Hawaiian Affairs trustees should devote their attention to delivering promised benefits (“OHA demands TMT halt until Native Hawaiian concerns, safety issues resolved,” Star-Advertiser, July 13).
