“Hey, if you don’t like it, let ’em leave, let ’em leave.”
These words were uttered by our 45th president, Donald Trump, at a campaign rally in North Carolina on July 17.
These words were directed at four current members of the U.S. House of Representatives, four women elected to represent their districts in the states of Michigan, Minnesota, New York and Massachusetts.
Why would he tell them to, in essence, “love it or leave it,” a commonly heard phrase during Richard Nixon’s presidency, simply because they raised their voices in opposition to his administration’s policies?
If no one ever raised their voices in opposition to American policies, America would not be America.
The U.S. Supreme Court’s Dred Scott decision would stand and slavery would be legal. Women would not be able to vote and the Vietnam War might still be raging.
