I have been saddened by keeping up with the daily news pertaining to the Thirty Meter Telescope (“Kapu aloha,” Star Advertiser, July 21).
Some protesters are strongly against the construction of the telescope because of religious beliefs against further desecration of the sacred mountain. As the article suggests, Mauna Kea is a mountain that encapsulates long-standing Native Hawaiian grievances.
I believe very valid grievances from the past are: illegal and immoral annexation, overthrow of Queen Liliuokalani and attempts to destroy Hawaiian culture, language and religion. These items have left a dark, indelible mark on the U.S. Worse, bitterness and resentment still linger strongly for many people with Hawaiian lineage. Even non-Hawaiians like myself comprehend the beef and resentment.
I sincerely hope the TMT ordeal will be settled amicably whether it is built or not. To the protesters, stand strong! You are supported by many of good will. Imua!
