Two former and one current Hawaii men’s volleyball players are in Lima, Peru, this week as members of the U.S. national team at the Pan American Games.
Making up a quarter of the 12-man roster are former All-American setter Joe Worsley, former Rainbow Warrior hitter Kupono Fey who is at libero, current Warrior hitter Colton Cowell. Cowell is the only collegiate player on the roster.
The three also were part of the U.S. team that finished fifth at last month’s Pan Am Cup in Puerto Rico.
The U.S. opens pool play Tuesday with Chile at the Callao Sports Center. Also in the U.S. pool are Mexico and Brazil.
The men’s tournament runs through Sunday.
Warrior commit helps Brazil to bronze
Incoming Hawaii freshman middle Guilherme Voss Messias Dos Santos had a match-high seven blocks as Brazil swept Russia 25-21, 27-25, 25-12 for the bronze medal at the FIVB U21 World Championship on Saturday in Bahrain.
The 6-foot-5 Dos Santos also hit 1.000 while putting down five kills and added an ace. He led the tournament with a 0.88 blocks per set average and finished hitting .651.
Wahine match with UC Irvine changed
Hawaii’s Big West home volleyball match with UC Irvine, originally scheduled for Thursday, Oct. 3, has been moved to Friday, Oct. 4.
The move apparently was to accommodate a change in the scheduled NBA preseason game between the Los Angeles Clippers and Houston Rockets from Oct. 4 to Oct 3.
The volleyball match, the Rainbow Wahine’s conference home opener, at the Stan Sheriff Center remains at 7 p.m.
Moniz advances at U.S. Open of Surfing
Hawaii’s Seth Moniz finished second in his Round 2 heat as the Vans US Open of Surfing got underway on Sunday at Huntington Beach, Calif.
Currently ranked 14th on the championship tour, Moniz scored a two-wave total of 11.10 to edge out France’s Gatien Delahaye (10.20).
Hawaii surfers who were eliminated in their Round 2 heats were Sebastian Zietz and Kiron Jabour. Dusty Payne, Finn McGill and Torrey Meister did not advance out of their first-round heats.
