Hawaii’s Malia Manuel posted a 13.60 to win her third-round heat at the U.S. Open of Surfing on Thursday at Huntington Beach, Calif.
Manuel beat Australia’s Nikki Van Dijk (13.27) and France’s Vahine Fierro (5.17). Manuel will face France’s Tessa Thyssen in the fourth round.
Fellow local surfer Summer Macedo was eliminated after finishing third in her heat with a 9.20.
At the Vans Joel Tudor Duct Tape Invitational, also being held at Huntington Beach, Hawaii’s Honolua Blomfield (11.94) and Kirra Seale (11.37) won their women’s semifinal heats.
U.S. men’s volleyball team wins in Peru
The U.S. men’s volleyball team, with three players with Hawaii ties, beat Mexico 26-24, 25-22, 25-23 in a pool-play match Thursday at the Pan American Games in Lima, Peru.
Former Hawaii outside hitter Kupono Fey played all three sets at libero and former UH setter Joe Worsley played in the third set. Neither player recorded any stats for the U.S. (1-1). Current Rainbow Warriors hitter Colton Cowell did not play.
The U.S., which is coached by Warriors assistant Milan Zarkovic, will play Brazil (2-0) today.
Laguna Niguel maintains lead after Day 4
Laguna Niguel Billfish Club-Firestein maintained its lead after Day 4 of the Hawaiian International Billfish Tournament off Kailua-Kona.
Laguna Niguel has 1,500 points and is followed by Japan’s Olympian Dream Fishing Club with 1,450 and Japan’s Kona Gamefish Club-Blue Fin with 1,400.
Pajaro Valley Gamefish Club-Team 1 tagged and released four Pacific blue marlin and a spearfish on Thursday to move into a three-way tie for fourth with 1,250 points.
