Gov. David Ige’s recent decision to extend by two years the permit for construction of the Thirty Meter Telescope ultimately will work against him.
For those of us who stand to protect Mauna Kea from further harm, any delay of construction is good news.
The world is watching as Mauna Kea takes the stage, showcasing the essence and sacredness of aloha ‘aina and the unconditional love we have for our homeland.
We are not going away. This is our home. This is where we take our stand.
This is where we say “No!” to anyone who would desecrate our ‘aina in the name of scientific curiosity.
This is where we say “No!” to anyone who would allow toxic poisons to pierce our ‘aina, poison our waters and pollute the air we breathe.
This is where we say “No!” to any and all construction that would further destroy and erode the sacred summit of Mauna Kea.
Ige can be the hero who saves Mauna Kea from further harm or he can be the villain who caters to foreign interests.
History will record his legacy either way.
