The Maui team, representing the United States, took down Curacao 11-0 in the Senior League Baseball World Series championship in Easley, S.C., on Saturday.
Maui was led by the pitching of Lee Souza, who held Curacao scoreless while striking out five and allowing only one hit.
They struck early, with three runs in the top of the first inning, highlighted by Isaiah Souza’s two-run single.
Maui scored another three runs in the second inning and five more in the sixth to put the game away.
Hawaii surfers sweep longboard event
The Vans U.S. Open of Surfing continued Saturday with an all-Hawaii finish in the Women’s Vans Joel Tudor Duct Tape Invitational in Huntington Beach, Calif.
Oahu’s Kelis Kaleoppa, 14, won the longboard event, becoming the youngest person to do so.
Behind her were Kirra Seale, Honolua Blomfield and Haley Otto.
U.S. men’s volleyball team finishes sixth
The United States men’s volleyball team finished sixth at the XVIII Pan American Games, dropping its fifth-place match against Puerto Rico 25-22, 21-25, 22-25, 25-20, 15-8 on Saturday in Lima, Peru.
Former UH Warrior Joe Worsley started the first three sets and subbed in the fourth set, contributing five points total. Current Hawaii player Colton Cowell also started the first three sets and hit 53%, scoring nine points.
Honolulu Quarterback Club celebrates 72
The Honolulu Quarterback Club is celebrating its 72-year anniversary on Monday with guest speaker Rick Chin at the Maple Garden Restaurant in Honolulu.
Chin is a coach for the Jr. Olympic Track & Field Program and is the head track coach at Christian Academy.
Tickets are $17 per person for lunch. The meal starts at 11:30 a.m. and the program at noon.
