We appreciate Dan Nakaso’s coverage of efforts in Chinatown, but a clarification is necessary (“Funding boosts efforts to reduce Chinatown homeless,” Star-Advertiser, July 25).
It is the Chinatown Improvement District, a 501(c)3 nonprofit, that contracts services for the security pilot project — not “10 Chinatown businesses.”
Contributions from the private sector have powered a project that has provided services for businesses and individuals who have contributed, as well as for those who haven’t contributed, on both public and private property. The grant from the Hawaii Lodging and Tourism Association and the Hawaii Tourism Authority supplements ongoing community efforts to tackle community issues.
It is a dynamic project which continues to be adjusted to meet community needs. We have been happy to share our experiences with groups from other communities who have asked.
Lee Stack
President, Chinatown Improvement District
