The commentary about the Ala Wai flood mitigation plan has great merit, but I am responding to the writer’s comment that the city is still contemplating a Topgolf project at the golf course (“Rethink Ala Wai flood mitigation plan,” Star-Advertiser, Island Voices, July 31).
Since this topic first came up several years ago, I have seen what these monstrosities actually look like in Columbus, Ohio and Germantown, Md. Anyone even contemplating erecting such a structure needs to make a personal visit to see what they’re advocating, especially at night.
The giant clubhouse and high fences, up to 170 feet, are in themselves a scourge on the skyline, but the bright lights illuminating nearby areas far into the night would be an unconscionable intrusion on surrounding neighborhoods. I’m sure money is the main driver (no pun intended) behind this project, but it would further desecrate the beauty that makes Hawaii the paradise it is. Please can this idea.
