Maui police found a body at the base of a waterfall in the Bamboo Forest area of Hana Highway and positively identified it Sunday as that of a man who had been missing since Wednesday.
Craig Michael Pitt, 35, was last seen at the Banana Bungalows and was believed to have gone on a hike on one of the trails along Hana Highway.
Police started a missing-person investigation and found his vehicle parked on the shoulder of the highway near mile post 7.8 on Friday. They continued the search with the department’s search dog and the Maui Fire Department helicopter.
After locating Pitt’s body, police made positive fingerprint identification.
The circumstances and cause of Pitt’s death are under investigation. However, police do not suspect foul play.
Night closures planned for Hana Highway
Nightly closures of a portion of Hana Highway will begin Aug. 12 as the state Department of Transportation undertakes geotechnical examinations in preparation for the rehabilitation of six bridges along the famed road to Hana.
All lanes and all directions of the highway between the Kailua Stream Bridge at mile marker 5.9 and the Mokulehua Stream Bridge at mile marker 28.2 will be closed from 8 p.m. to 4 a.m. weeknights Aug. 12-30. The road will be open Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights.
First responders will be allowed through the closure.
The project is being developed in partnership with the Federal Highway Administration. More information on the Hana Highway bridge improvements can be found at hanabridgeimprovements.com.
