On Monday, after a deadly weekend with two mass shootings and innumerable conflicts around the world, I was feeling depressed. Around 9:45 a.m., I waited in line at Punchbowl and King streets to board a No. 1 bus. When I got close enough to see inside the bus, I saw something that restored my faith in humanity.
The bus driver was dealing with an old man in a wheelchair and three elders with walkers and shopping bags. Somehow he got everyone settled, he carried walkers and bags, smiling and acting like they were part of his family.
Seeing that bus driver and his graciousness to seniors, a couple of whom could barely walk, lifted my mood. He was doing his job in such a beautiful way; I knew the world is more than conflict and headlines. It is the simple day-to-day contacts that can sustain us.
