Hawaii’s Allisen Corpuz edged Sophie Guo of China on Wednesday to advance to the round of 32 at the U.S. Women’s Amateur Championship in West Point, Miss.
Corpuz, a Punahou graduate and Southern California senior, never trailed in the first-round match at Old Waverly Golf Club. She birdied the par-3 17th hole to go 1 up against Guo then held on with a par on No. 18. Corpuz entered the match-play bracket as the ninth seed and faces 24th-seeded Dylan Kim of Texas today in the round of 32.
Aneka Seumanutafa, a former Hawaii resident now based in Maryland, also advanced with a 4-and-3 win over Julie Houston of Texas. Seumanutafa, the 53rd seed, faces Angela Liu of China today.
Kaiser graduate and USC sophomore Malia Nam’s comeback fell short against fourth-seeded Megan Schofill. Nam was 3 down after six holes but was within one after a birdie on the par-5 10th. Schofill managed to closed out a 2-and-1 win with a par on No. 17.
