Roosevelt successfully ran its new offense Friday against McKinley.
Sky Ogata completed 27 of 35 passes for 401 yards and three touchdowns as host Roosevelt beat McKinley 42-6 in an OIA Division II game.
The Rough Riders (1-0, 1-0 OIA D-II) switched from the split-back veer to the run-and-shoot this season with the arrival of offensive coordinator Anthony Monteihl.
“We were a lot more run-heavy last year, but we had a coaching change,” said Ogata, a senior. “It widened my eyes more on passing rather than running the ball.”
Scott Chung, Wesley James and Chase Akana caught touchdown passes from Ogata.
Akana, who transferred to Roosevelt after St. Francis closed its doors after last school year, caught seven passes for 138 yards.
“It’s all to my coaches. They told me what to do and I just did it,” said Akana, a senior. “My quarterback throwing the ball and the offensive line blocking for him, I’d like to thank them.”
Roosevelt’s defense forced five turnovers, including interceptions by Kevin Davis, Isaac Kaleikau and Josh Maikui. Davis also returned a botched snap in punt formation 3 yards for a touchdown.
Roosevelt also scored on short runs by Myka Kukahiwa and Kalei Wahilani.
The Rough Riders held the Tigers to 11 yards rushing on 19 attempts.
“These kids they work hard on that side of the ball,” said Roosevelt coach Kui Kahooilihala of his defense. “It’s all about making plays, and our kids on that side like Aalona Monteilh and Isaac Kaleikau, these kids are hungry every down. They’re looking for a pick or just looking for the ball.”
Anthony Monteihl, the offensive coordinator, and Aalona Monteilh, a senior safety, both were at Saint Louis School last year.
The lone bright spot for McKinley was Aaron Velasco’s 85-yard kickoff return for a touchdown in the third quarter. It was the first points scored by the Tigers (0-2, 0-1) this season. They lost 30-0 to King Kekaulike in a nonleague game last week.
