In recent years, an annual count of more than 7,000 pets have been adopted at the Hawaiian Humane Society. And an estimated 60% of Oahu homes now have a pet. Contributing to the animal adoption effort are events like “Clear the Shelters,” through which fees will be waived on Saturday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., at the Moiliili campus.
This event is part of a nationwide campaign in which animal shelters across the country are partnering with business-sector supporters to raise awareness about pet adoption and find homes for animals in need. Since 2015, it has helped place an estimated 250,000 pets in homes.
Study at Mauna Kea, wi-fi permitting
The University of Hawaii has allowed students at the Mauna Kea encampment to hand in their college work virtually, by enrolling in one of 200 online or distance-learning courses. The only drawback may be technological. Signal strength may be limited. Already, telescope opponents conducting a livestream have had to ask the crowd to switch phones to airplane mode to enable it.
Alternatively, the students can turn in work when they dash home for a shower, and wi-fi time.
