Hurricane leaves devastated reef

We have plenty of photographic evidence that a powerful hurricane can pummel island neighborhoods and terrain. A recent expedition to Papa- hanaumokuakea Marine National Monument offers fresh evidence that underwater communities can be devastated, too. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration researchers tasked with assessing coral reef damage in the aftermath of October’s Category 3 Hurricane Walaka found that a reef edging French Frigate Shoals — previously one of the most diverse reefs in the isles — is now a wasteland of rubble. However, some surviving small corals offer a bit of hope that the reef can regrow.

Fare wars making landings here

Even if you missed the Southwest Airlines $99 trans-Pacific fare-o-rama, there are savings to be had — from other airlines, too. It does appear that the long-predicted fare war spurred by the arrival of Southwest to the Hawaii market is materializing. Last week, travel-trackers were finding deals, mostly in the $300-plus round-trip range, but at least one clocking in at $198. That’s round trip from San Jose to Kona or Kauai.
