Prepare for more traffic when University of Hawaii students resume classes, officials warn

    The state Department of Transportation is offering a new notification service for scheduled and emergency road closures, which the public can subscribe to at its website, hidot.hawaii.gov. The noti­fications can be customized by location and are available via email or text. The state's GoAkamai app soon will expand to include roads on Maui, Kauai and the Big Island.

    City Department of Transportation Services Deputy Director Jon Nouchi spoke at a news conference Monday about the anticipated traffic next week when University of Hawaii students return to classes. The city, Gov. David Ige and the state Department of Transportation teamed up to discuss ways motorists can “Beat the School Jam.”
