Kudos for Hawaii’s Congressman Ed Case for the proposed PLAN Act (Protecting Local Authority and Neighborhoods Act), which would stop short- term rental scofflaws like Airbnb Inc. from illegally renting homes in residential areas to transient visitors.
Nationwide, this would bring in legal taxation and slow down the cost of housing, which then will make it more available.
Locally, Case has huge support, as last Friday’s “Big Q” question showed that the city’s crackdown on illegal vacation rentals has 66% approval (“What do you think about the city’s crackdown on illegal vacation rentals so far?,” Star-Advertiser, Aug. 16).
No doubt he will get nationwide support, since it affects most major vacation destinations.
