A typical trade wind weather pattern is expected to last through the weekend, weather officials said, with clouds and showers favoring windward and mauka areas.

Today is expected to be mostly sunny in the Hawaiian islands, with highs from 87 to 92 degrees Fahrenheit, and tradewinds from 15 to 20 miles per hour.

Despite the trades, the heat index, which indicates what it feels like when temperature and humidity are factored in, is expected to reach as high as 98 degrees in Honolulu, Kapolei and Kahului, and 100 in Lihue, this afternoon.

A string of record high temperatures, meanwhile, continue to match or surpass previous records on an almost daily basis this month. A high of 90 degrees in Lihue on Wednesday matched the previous record set in 1987.

So far this month, Honolulu and Kahului have set one record high apiece, while Hilo has set three, and Lihue has set five record high temperatures.

Looking ahead, forecasters said increased showers are possible late Saturday into Sunday as a pocket of higher moisture moves through from east to west. Then Tuesday through midweek, wind speeds are expected to decline into the light and variable range, bringing warm and humid conditions once again.
