A 25-year-old swimmer used a rescue tube to help save a 37-year-old Oakland, Calif. man who got swept out into the surf by a rip tide in Hana at Koki Beach.

The 25-year-old man had already swum out with a rescue tube to the victim, who was supporting himself with the tube, when firefighters arrived, the Maui Fire Department said.

Two rescue tubes are available at Koki Beach.

The man was 150 feet off shore at the northern end of the beach.

A firefighter swam out with another rescue tube, and other firefighters got a rescue surfboard ready (which was not used).

Two firefighters assisted as he got closer to shore.

Medics assessed his condition and found he swalled some seawater but was in otherwise good condition, and refused transport to the clinic, MFD said in a press release.
