Muggy weather continues as tradewinds threaten to ease up next week
Moderate to breezy tradewinds will continue through the weekend, according to National Weather Service forecasters, but will ease up again early next week.
Today is expected to be mostly sunny, with scattered showers in the morning, highs from 87 to 92 degrees Fahrenheit, and winds from 15 to 25 miles per hour.
The heat index, a reflection of what it feels like when temperature and humidity are factored in, is expected to reach as high as 96 degrees in Lihue, 97 in Honolulu and Kapolei, and 100 in Kahului, this afternoon. The high heat indexes are expected to continue on Saturday.
No record temperatures were set on Thursday, an exception to a month with record highs and matches nearly every day, primarily in Lihue.
Forecasters said an increase in shower coverage is expected late Saturday into Sunday as a pocket of higher moisture moves through from east to west. Showers will favor windward and mauka areas, except over the leeward areas of the Big Island, where afternoon and evening clouds and showers form in response to the local sea breeze.
