The protesters at Mauna Kea have lost their way. Initially they drew attention to the many injustices suffered by Native Hawaiian people over the generations. In so doing they have created an opportunity for meaningful change focused on current issues, but not through blocking the Thirty Meter Telescope.
Allowing the TMT to go forward honors the original Polynesian navigators, as well as our current ones, by advancing knowledge that will benefit all mankind. It allows all the professionals who work atop Mauna Kea to continue to do their jobs. It allows our state to continue to be revered and respected as an international partner in advancing science. It allows Hawaii to be a place where laws are followed and compromises are negotiated.
By taking a hard stance that TMT will not be built, the protesters are dishonoring much we hold dear.
