Mililani’s normally high-powered offense wasn’t in high gear in the first half against Farrington on Saturday, but the Trojans’ defense was in shutdown mode the entire game.
No. 2 Mililani, which pulled starting quarterback Brendyn Agbayani in the first half, beat Farrington 35-0 in an OIA Open Division game at Skippa Diaz Stadium.
The Trojans’ defense allowed minus-44 rushing yards and 112 passing yards.
“The boys are playing together and that’s what we want to do, get these guys to play for one another and play together,” said Mililani coach Rod York of his defense.
Agbayani was replaced by Esaiah Gideon after throwing a pair of interceptions in the first quarter. Agbayani threw a 25-yard touchdown pass to Kanoa Gibson in between the picks.
“Brendyn came out struggling and we went with the next guy. The next guy came in and did a good job,” York said.
Agbayani returned to start the second half and guided the Trojans to touchdowns on three of their first four possessions for a 35-0 lead.
Mililani’s second-half scoring plays were a 31-yard pass from Agbayani to Gibson, and 2- and 6-yard runs by Jasiah Alcover. The final two touchdowns were off short fields after Farrington botched a snap in punt formation and had a 9-yard punt.
“I was second-guessing myself,” said Agbayani, a junior. “Coach Rod talked to me. I couldn’t be selfish. I had to fix it and bounce back.”
Agbayani finished 6-for-13 for 101 yards, while Gideon was 6-for-12 for 44 yards. Gideon, a freshman who was on the junior varsity last week, threw a 14-yard touchdown pass to Gibson on the first play of the second quarter to make it 14-0.
York said Gideon was injured late in the first half, but Agbayani would have started the second anyway.
Agbayani is a first-year starter who is still finding his way, according to York.
“He’s still new, he’s still learning,” York said. “We’re trying to get him as much reps as possible. We’ll try to open it up a little more.”
Gibson finished with six catches for 98 yards and three touchdowns for the Trojans (3-0, 3-0).
“I felt like I did pretty good,” said Gibson, a senior. “Our quarterbacks were doing good. They had the accuracy.”
Said York of Gibson: “He’s a guy who can stretch the field for us. He’s got pretty good speed and we can depend on him.”
Farrington quarterback Darius Chaffin was injured early while playing defense and replaced by Jonah Aina-Chaves. Chaffin returned in the second quarter, but saw limited action at quarterback. Aina-Chaves finished 9-for-20 for 98 yards.
The Governors (0-4, 0-2) have scored only six points in four games this season.
