Right-handed pitcher Rico Garcia, a Saint Louis School alumnus who was drafted in 2016 after his senior season at Hawaii Pacific by the Colorado Rockies, is being called up to the big leagues, according to a source.
Garcia is expected to pitch today against Rick Porcello and the Boston Red Sox at Coors Field.
Garcia was a 30th-round draft pick of the Rockies and one of two HPU players taken in the 2016 draft.
He threw five shutout innings and allowed three hits with five strikeouts in a 9-0 victory for the Albuquerque Isotopes in the Triple-A Pacific Coast League on Wednesday. He was scheduled to pitch in tonight’s game against Las Vegas but has been pulled from his start.
He is 2-4 with a 7.16 ERA in 12 starts for the Isotopes this year, allowing 73 hits in 551⁄3 innings with 24 walks and 45 strikeouts.
He was promoted to Triple-A two months ago after going 8-2 with a 1.85 ERA and 87 strikeouts in 68 innings for the Double-A Hartford Yard Goats.
The Associated Press on Monday night still listed German Marquez as the Rockies’ starting pitcher, but the team placed him on the injuired list. ESPN lists Garcia as the probable starter.
Garcia holds records at Hawaii Pacific for strikeouts in a game (16), in a season (87) and in his career (217).
He will be the second HPU alum to play in an MLB game, joining Benny Agbayani.
