1 of 3 Maui food establishments closed by state Health Department reopens

One of three food establishments on Maui that recently received red placards from the Hawaii Department of Health has since reopened.

Ohana Tacos in Lahaina was able to reopen on Wednesday after a follow-up inspection found the level of cockroach activity had decreased significantly and no longer poses an imminent health threat. Additionally, the business underwent deep cleaning to remove old food debris and grease build-up.

The business at 3600 Lower Honoapiilani Road was allowed to reopen with a yellow placard, categorized as a “conditional pass.”

A follow-up inspection will be conducted next Thursday.

A red placard was also issued to the Barefruit Bar, closing the juice and smoothie bar at the same retail complex as Ohana Tacos due to roach infestations as well.

Barefruit Bar did not pass its first follow-up inspection on Monday but has a second one scheduled for Friday.

On Wednesday, health officials closed down Paradise Supermart Fast Food & Catering in Kahului, Maui, due to a rat infestation.

The supermart at 207 E. Wakea Ave. in Kahului, Maui, was issued a red placard after inspectors found traces of dark-colored rat droppings, indicating recent activity, on nearly all shelves in the market. Inspectors also observed rat droppings on kitchen counters, sheet pans that appeared to be in use, and along floorboards.

Additionally, the inspectors found several pockets of cockroaches on market produce shelves.

The supermart will remain closed, and its foodservice permit will remain suspended, until the establishment completes required actions, passes a follow-up health inspection and receives state Health Department approval to reopen.

The establishment must contract a pest control service to eradicate the rodent infestation, and conduct deep cleaning to remove food debris and sanitize all food contact surfaces.

A follow-up inspection for Paradise Supermart is also scheduled for Friday.
