Yes, August was hot in Hawaii.
So hot that the record high temperatures for August were either tied or broken 14 times at four locations, according to data compiled by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
All of the records were for temperatures 90 degrees or higher.
Most of them, six ties and two new records, happened on Kauai. Lihue Airport equaled its record high temperature of 90 degrees six times before breaking the August record by one degree on Aug. 25. The new record at Mahaulepu is 97 degrees, set Aug. 16.
NOAA has 69 years of data for Lihue Airport and 37 years for Mahaulepu.
Molokai tied its record high of 93 degree three times last month. Honolulu’s record high temperature for August was also 93 degrees, which it tied once, broke by one degree on Aug. 11, then equaled Thursday.
There are 69 years of data for Molokai and 79 years of daily temperatures recorded at Daniel K. Inouye International Airport.
Temperatures in the 90s are not common for Hawaii in August.
For 1981 to 2010 the average daily high temperature for August was 84.6 degrees at Lihue Airport, 86.0 degrees at Mahaulepu, 85.2 degrees at Molokai Airport and 88.0 degrees in Honolulu, according to the Western Regional Climate Center.
