Waikiki Roughwater Swim lives up to its name

Jim Cotton, who founded the Waikiki Roughwater Swim in 1970, was one of about 1,000 swimmers who attempted the Waikiki Roughwater Swim on Monday. The 86-year-old was also one of hundreds who needed assistance from rescue crews due to rough ocean conditions.

Organizers warned participants of the strong currents before the 50th annual Waikiki Roughwater Swim took place. The first group of swimmers entered the water Monday.

A swimmer Monday was rescued by Jet Ski and bought back to Sans Souci Beach, where the event started. More than 350 swimmers were assisted in the rough conditions.
