Wahiawa fire causes brief evacuations, road closure
Five residents were briefly evacuated and a brush fire that led to the closure of a section of Kunia Road damaged three storage containers.
The fire was 70 % contained at about 7:45 p.m., with firefighters expected to remain on scene into the night.
The five residents were briefly evacuated from Kunia Farm Lots, and the fire had consumed about 200 acres, said HFD spokesman Capt. Scot Seguirant. It began at about 11 a.m., and fire crews were on the scene by 11:07 a.m., he said.
Kunia Road from Anonui Street to Kunia Drive in Wahiawa was reopened about 6:40 p.m. after several hours as firefighters battled the flamesnear the Hawaii Country Club. A total of 21 units and 62 personnel were on the scene, along with Air 1.
The fire, which was burning for most of the afternoon, branched off into two different areas and forced crews to fight on both the Wailua side and the Palawai side, Seguirant said.
The Palawai side of the fire was moving toward the Kunia Farm lots, in the area where the three storage containers burned and other structures had been threatened.
