Letter: Navy left out in praise for Arizona Memorial

It’s remarkable that the 496-word commentary, “Reopening of USS Arizona Memorial is very welcome news” (Star-Advertiser, Island Voices, Sept. 1), praised several organizations but did not give due credit to the U.S. Navy for its 60 years of providing the Pearl Harbor boat tours.

Navy personnel began conducting narrated boat tours around Ford Island before the Arizona Memorial was dedicated on Memorial Day, 1962.

When it opened, the Navy began shuttle boat tours to the memorial in out-of-date World War II whaleboats, with no monetary support for its operation. And while the Arizona Memorial was shut down for 15 months, our Navy men and Navy women still manned and narrated the boat tours every day.
