Carsten Mikkelsen’s commentary on being misled into buying an illegal rental property only reaffirms the point of passing the city’s Bill 89: Non-residents with money are putting a lot of the rental market out of reach for local residents, albeit unknowingly in Mikkelsen’s case (“Vacation rental law will cause damage,” Star-Advertiser, Island Voices, Sept. 4).
I understand how a free market works. But Honolulu is not Houston, and if you are not part of the rental market solution, then you become part of the problem.
